Kaneohe, HI
History
Kaneohe Hawaii began as a small farming community on the windward side of Oahu. Its name comes from an old Hawaiian legend about a woman’s husband who was cruel like a piece of sharp bamboo. Kaneohe means “bamboo man”. During the Pearl Harbor attack, Kaneohe was one of the first Oahu communities to be bombed and was heavily damaged. Today this thriving city of 35,000 is a beautiful residential area seven miles northeast of Honolulu. Kaneohe offers scenic parks, activities, educational opportunities and events for all ages. Parks and Recreation
Kaneohe has a variety of recreational areas guaranteed to entertain every family member. Nearby Kaneohe Bay offers plenty of white sand to play in along with a great fishing pier and some of the best views on Oahu. Boating and kayaking are popular activities enjoyed on the bay. For those who love browsing in malls, Windward Mall is just across the street from the shopping center. Kaneohe is also home to some of Oahu’s best schools. Along with charter and private schools, the Kaneohe Public School District provides K-12 for young students. Adult students will find higher education conveniently located at Kaneohe’s Windward Community College and other nearby colleges and universities.
Events
Celebrations are definitely a great part of life in Kaneohe. Participants flock in from all areas of the state for the annual Kaneohe Christmas Parade. The parade is one of the biggest community parades in Hawaii and features bands, floats and plenty of Christmas cheer to kick off the holiday season. Kaneohe and Oahu also host several marathons that welcome runners from around the world. Kaneohe's running routes help runners train for races such as the HURT Trail 100 while enjoying some of Oahu’s most beautiful scenery.
