Kapolei, HI Area GuideJames Campbell, original owner of much of the land that makes up Kapolei, might have passed away in 1900, but his legacy continues. The Kapolei master plan began in the 1970’s and became a reality when they broke ground in 1990 and in the forty years since those plans were made, the area has gone from undeveloped real estate to one of the most in - demand areas on Oahu island. Unincorporated, Kapolei’s name is taken from the name of the volcanic cone, Puu o Kapolei (Beloved Hill of Kapo). Developed by Kapolei Property Development, a subsidiary of the James Campbell Company, Kapolei has grown into a beautiful area of Honolulu County, Hawaii, a bustling urban center for Oahu. Though technically not a city, it is however, popularly known as the Second City of Kapolei. A planned development, Kapolei is well on the way to becoming one of Hawaii’s major urban centers, with projections showing there will be 65,000 jobs in the area and by the year 2025, the population is estimated to reach over 173,000. Kapolei is becoming the second urban center for Oahu (after Honolulu), Hawaii's most densely populated island. Much of Oahu's future population growth is slated for the Ewa Plain and southern slopes of the island's central valley, between Waipahu on Pearl Harbor and Wahiawa near the island's center. Kapolei is home to a public library, post office and schools, including Kapolei High School as well as a private school for Pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade that opened in 2004. In 2002, Pacific Business News reported that the area had the second highest median income on Oahu and Sterling’s Best Places reported that Kapolei’s median income is around $20,000 higher than the national average.

Eighteen years after that groundbreaking ceremony, Kapolei isn’t just a growing, thriving area, it’s fast becoming a major urban center on the island. Projections show that by the year 2025 there will be more than 65,000 jobs in the area and it will be giving downtown Honolulu a run for the money in terms of a great place to live. KPD’s roots are in a private trust, the estate of James Campbell, a Scots immigrant who founded or co-owned several businesses and invested in real estate after settling on the island. For more than a century, Kapolei Property Development handled and expanded the assets of the trust, not just in Hawaii but Washington, D.C. and 16 states.
